Our partners in Haiti: (Evangelical Baptist Union of Haiti)

HAITI has 6 - 7 million inhabitants, and the UEBH is present in 5 departments of 9 (center and the north).  The partnership with the Biblical Mission began with the desire of the UEBH to widen its relations with Europe through: exchanges with churches, seeking human resources from the Biblical Mission, looking for solutions to the enormous material needs of Haiti, and complementing the efforts of the numerous UFM missionaries presently working in Haiti.

THE UFM is favorable to an opening with other partners, and wishes to widen the collaboration because the departure of several UFM missionaries has left the UEBH with problems of resources, management, structures, etc. Evangelization and edification cannot exist without the development of the man.

1) History

The UEBH (Evangelical Baptist Union of Haiti) began with the missionary work of an English minister, Alfred Pearce, who arrived in 1925 in the north of the island at Port-de-Paix.
Beginning in1943 the UFM Mission (USA) developed the field in the northwest of the country to Port-au-Prince.
In 1976 the UFM merged with the UEBH by placing their missionaries in the service of the UEBH and by transferring ownership of all their land and properties in Haiti to the UEBH.

2) Today

The UEBH consists of more than 100 Churches with 60,000 members of which 40,000 are baptized. The biggest Church, Bolosse, has more than 2000 baptized believers. The UEBH is implanted in four of Haiti’s new departments and in the Dominican Republic.
The address of the office of UEBH is: 261 route des Dalles, Port-au-Prince.  Telephone: 23 0271 / 23 8702 / 23 9478 Faxes: 23 8702.
It has more than 100 ministers and evangelists.
THE UEBH collaborates with the other Protestant and evangelical Churches of Haiti. It is recognized as of public usefulness by the government of Haiti and enjoys the status of the NGO.

THE UEBH is comprised of many churches, which were begun by local evangelization and are more or less independent.
It maintains fraternal relations with the other unions of churches in Haiti.

Needs in Haiti are immense and the poverty is extreme.
In an empty political context, only the Church can offer a hope.
Approximately 30 % of Christians try to live their faith by their testimony and by sharing of the little that they have.

The objectives of the UEBH are:
Evangelize and strengthen the Christians in their faith.
The extreme poverty obligates the UEBH to help in social development. An elementary school and a social work center are generally implanted next to the local churches.
Every minister is as well an agent of development, and he needs counsel and assistance to carry out this task.

3) The works

THE UEBH is interested in the development of the man in his whole being. So in addition to teaching God's word, it has developed several social work programs.

The Evangelical Bible School proposes biblical training for every Christian who wishes it.

The Seminary of Evangelical Theology of Port-au-Prince (STEP) offers four years of university theological training.

One hundred and fifty elementary schools and one secondary school, the Maranatha School of Port-au-Prince, count more than 25,000 pupils.
The Evangelical Maranatha School is situated in Bolosse, a district west of Port-au-Prince. Founded in 1956, it offers secondary training to 350 pupils who cannot afford to frequent private school. About twenty pupils graduate every year with their diploma, the Bac. A complement in technical training is at present envisaged to help students get established in a job.

A hospital and several health centers offer their services in disadvantaged regions (Hospital in La Pointe) with a reception center for sick and disadvantaged children, the House of Hope. About fifty children are cared for and more than 150 meals are served daily.

The Center of Professional Training in Beraca at La Pointe, Port-de-Paix, in the north of the country, trains 180 pupils of rural origin in the following professions: cabinetmaking, carpentry, joiner's workshop, ironwork, electricity, plumbing, sewing, cutting, cake shop, etc.  Sixty percent of the outgoing students find employment, while 20 % continue their studies.

A printing office in Port-au-Prince, the Evangelical Press, publishes several works in French and Creole.
Several developmental projects are proposed by the UEBH, such as the protection of drinking water by constructing latrines in the poor and desert region of the northwest of the island.
