CONFESSION OF FAITH OF THE EVANGELICAL ASSOCIATION
FRENCH-LANGUAGE BAPTIST CHURCHES

  1. The true God

We worship the one and only God in three persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. He is eternal, infinite, unchanging, almighty, omnipresent, omniscient, perfectly wise, holy, just and good. He is spirit. He is light and truth. He is love. He is the creator of all things. To him are due, in the highest degree, trust, obedience, gratitude, love and praise.

  1. The Holy Scriptures

We believe that the Bible is God's Word to us. In it lies the only infallible rule of faith and life, as well as the fundamental criteria for testing every doctrine, every tradition, every religious or ecclesiastical system and every Christian action. The revelation it brings us cannot be modified or supplemented by any other.

We believe that the Holy Spirit has sovereignly presided over the origin and formation of the sixty-six books of the Bible. We believe that he himself ensured their perfect teaching and complete truth through the authors who, in their humanity and by his divine inspiration, helped to communicate the Word of God to us.

We believe that the Bible reveals everything we need to know to attain salvation, to live according to God and find our joy in him.

  1. Creation and man

We believe that God, in His perfect goodness, created the universe and everything in it. We believe that this creation was originally entirely good, and that it continues to be directed towards the realization of a project of justice and love.

We believe that God created man and woman in His own image, in order to associate them with His work and the manifestation of His glory.

  1. The breakup and its consequences

We believe that, created morally just and good, our first parents consciously disobeyed their Creator. As a result, they lost their original condition, and the whole of creation suffers the consequences of their sin.

We believe that, since then, all men, their descendants, have been separated from God, inclined to evil and enslaved to sin. They transgress the divine laws and, as a result, remain exposed to eternal perdition. Satan, the instigator of the rupture between humanity and its Creator, and those angels who, with him, contribute to maintaining this state of affairs, are doomed to eternal punishment.

We believe that God, in His goodness, has willed to offer mankind access to His grace. Personally and directly responsible before God, every human being is thus called to freely determine his or her eternal destiny by the spiritual position he or she takes during life, in the light of the lights available to him or her.

  1. Jesus Christ and his work

We believe that, as the eternal Word of God, the Only-begotten Son became a man in the person of Jesus of Nazareth. He is the Christ, the Messiah promised by the prophets. Conceived of the Holy Spirit and born of a virgin, he is as truly man as he is truly God. While willingly lowering himself, the Son of God manifested the same perfection in the realm of what is true as in the realm of what is good. Tempted as we are in all things, he remained perfectly holy. In his life as in his death, he fully accomplished God's will, expressed his mind and incarnated the immensity of his love.

We believe that Jesus Christ willingly suffered and died on the cross. To satisfy divine justice, he offered his perfect life as an atoning sacrifice for sinners.

We believe that Jesus Christ is bodily risen and ascended into heaven. He sits at the right hand of the Father and shares his glory. He intercedes with Him for His own; He will return to take them with Him, and to establish the reign of God in all its glory. He is the only mediator between God and man. He will judge the living and the dead. He is Savior and Lord.

  1. Salvation through Jesus Christ

We believe that people can be saved by grace, through faith. Salvation is fully granted to anyone who, in the light of the Gospel and under the power of the Holy Spirit, puts his trust in God, repents of his sins and claims the atonement accomplished on the cross. Placed in the benefit of Christ's death and resurrection, the sinner is forgiven and declared righteous by God. Baptized in the Spirit who regenerates him, he receives eternal life, which implies the renewal of his entire being.

  1. The Holy Spirit and His action in the Christian life

We believe that the Holy Spirit, a divine person, acts by applying to the heart the truths of Scripture, with which he cannot disagree. He thus produces, in those who are chosen according to God's design, the Christian life in its principle and in its effects; he enables them to progress in it and to persevere in it to the end.

We believe that the Holy Spirit is given to every child of God as a down payment and guarantee of his eternal inheritance. He reveals and communicates the glorious riches of Christ. To be truly Christian, every prayer and every work must result from his action. He alone can assure the believer of communion with his God and with his brothers and sisters.

  1. The Church

We believe that God has created for Himself a new people, the Church, a gathering of all those who have been regenerated and reconciled to Him through Christ. We believe that Jesus Christ is the Lord of the Church. He nourishes her with his Word and leads her with his Spirit. He will bring her to her fullness and final perfection at the renewal of all things.

We believe that the local Church is called to manifest, in its own way, the reality of the Body of Christ. It is a community of believers born of the Spirit, who, humble and aware of their weakness, want to live together to the glory of God.

We believe that there exists, among all those who believe in Jesus Christ, a unity created by the Spirit. It is the duty of every local Church and every Christian to preserve it for the honor of their Lord.

  1. Baptism and the Lord's Supper

We believe that Jesus Christ instituted two symbolic acts for his Church: baptism and the Lord's Supper. The local Churches ensure that their meaning is properly understood, and that their practice is worthy of what they represent.

We believe that baptism is a unique act, by which the believer publicly testifies to his or her adherence to the Christian faith. Immersion is the biblical form of baptism. Through this divinely chosen symbol of cleansing from sin, the believer expresses his union with Christ in His death, burial and resurrection, as well as his commitment to his Saviour and to his brothers and sisters. Baptism logically precedes entry into the local Church.

We believe that the Lord's Supper commemorates and proclaims the atoning death of Jesus Christ. We believe that the bread and wine are respectively symbols of the body and blood offered by our Savior on the cross. By participating in the Lord's Supper, the redeemed testify that they are one with Jesus Christ and in communion with one another, in the joyful hope of his glorious return.

  1. Resurrection, final judgment and eternity

We believe that all the dead will rise, the just and the unjust. We believe in the final judgment. Those who have persevered in unbelief will consciously suffer the eternal punishment they have deserved, and by virtue of the grace they have accepted by faith, the redeemed will enjoy eternal glory in the presence of their Savior.
